If dogs could talk, Taco Dogler would have quite a story to tell. We know he was abandoned from a hunting ranch in Idaho and found with a crushed crate on the side of a road. We are so thankful for the good Samaritans who found him and brought him into rescue!

It’s pretty clear Taco didn’t receive any training in his former life, but he has done brilliantly learning how to live indoors and display house manners. He is now house trained and has learned some basic commands. Taco free roams his foster home without chewing or damaging any of the property. Because he was dumped in a crate, his foster parents have not addressed crate training with him at all. 

With the trauma of his abandonment, Taco could be forgiven for having “issues” or neuroticism, but he is a happy boy who is doing well in a family with other dogs. He initially was resource guarding when he first came to his foster home, so he is fed several feet away from other other dogs in the house, but this behavior has vastly improved with consistent food and feeding times. 

Taco is estimated to be under 2 years old, so he still has typical, youthful English Setter energy. He would thrive in a home with another younger dog with whom he can tug toys and play actively. We don’t know how Taco would do with cats. 

Taco may not have received the memo that he is a bird dog, as he loves to hunt rodents. It’s one of his favorite things to do. He’d love a medium to large yard with a 4- to 5-foot fence as he burns off his energy by ensuring your property is free of squirrels and chipmunks. 

He is very affectionate and would do well with children older than five. As with any young English Setter, Taco will benefit from continued training on leash as he tends to pull when he is in his harness. He rides well in cars, which is a good thing as his foster home is in Montana. That is well outside SWESR’s region where we have volunteer transport available, so his new family will need to meet him in Montana and get him home from there. 

Taco is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. He is under veterinary care for Valley Fever, which is not contagious to people or other pets. Taco is doing very well with his treatment, which involves taking a pill and a capsule once daily.
