Meet Alfie, the 4-year-old, 55 pound dog who was the recent subject of SWESR’s “Guess the DNA Profile” game. His genetic results are in and Alfie is 60% herding dog, almost 20% hound dog, with the rest a mix of breeds you’d expect from a state which lacks significant spay/neuter support for the public. What this means for us is that Alfie is a 100% SWESR good boy, and he’s ready for his forever home. He currently lives in Texas, but he’s willing to relocate for the right parents!
Mr. Higgins had several homes before connecting with his forever foster parents as a 7-year-old in 2020. We know his birthday is in 2013, and we know he was at a Colorado shelter in 2015, adopted but then surrendered in 2016 for financial reasons. He was returned to the shelter with sensitivity issues that he had not been assessed with a year earlier. SWESR placed him with a foster parent who’s heart was in the right place, but they couldn’t provide him the exercise he needed. He was also suffering from separation anxiety, so it was clear he needed to find another foster home. His new foster said she wanted to adopt him and she was planning on moving to a property with a fenced yard. As many readers know, a 3-year-old English Setter in apartment living is difficult due to our breed’s energy levels.
Jasper is a super sweet and well mannered approximately 9 year young ES boy that was a stray in a rural OK shelter. He’s in a Share the Love – (https://swesr.org/foster-programs/) foster home in the DFW Texas area where he is getting much needed Vet care. He is a smaller boy (about 45 lbs when he gains much needed weight), quiet, house and crate trained, good with other dogs, ok as an only dog, gives kisses to his caretakers, cats unknown. Sweet Sally is an affectionate ES that is almost 2 years old. She made her way to SWESR because she doesn’t have the prey drive to hunt and would rather be a princess. Sally is being adopted by a former SWESR adopter in Wichita, KS.
Koda is 5 years young and a sweet, goofy ES boy that was pulled from a rural TX shelter where he was dropped off by a hunter. He will be heading to a Setter experienced home in Boulder, CO. Lucky pup!
In 2013 Kevin and Lisa saw a 4-month old Scout on a website, and they reached out with interest in meeting him. This would have been an easy meet up for Southern Californians, as everyone involved lived within an hour of each other. Young Scout had already had two families as his first mother received him as a gift from her boyfriend, but it turned out she was allergic to dogs. She then re-homed him to a friend who lived in an apartment but couldn’t manage him, at which point Scout was posted on-line, where Kevin and Lisa discovered him. At the last minute, Scout’s family cancelled the meet and greet and, unbeknownst to Kevin and Lisa, put the pup into breed rescue.
Han Solo is 9 years young and came to SWESR when his family was not able to keep him. He is 65 lbs, house and crate trained, and good with dogs and cats. He loves people and bonded quickly with his foster parents in CO.
Mya is a 21 month old affectionate freckle faced sweetie who loves people and is still very much a puppy, including chewing. Her energy level is high and she needs another active and playful dog in the home. She is in a foster home in S Central TX.
Sampson is the cutest, smartest 8 year young English Setter who forms strong bonds with his people and loves being part of the daily routine.
He joins his new mom in Las Vegas, NV.
Seven-month-old Matty was surrendered to SWESR in October 2022 by an older couple who could no longer provide Matty the home she needed due to their developing health difficulties. Bob and Lona had lost one of their English Setters just four weeks earlier. Lona was looking at SWESR’s Facebook page when she saw Matty’s picture and she was immediately hit with the gut feeling of “that’s my dog”. This awareness was difficult, as Bob and Lona had agreed that after 30 years of marriage and a total of 6 English Setters, they would now become a one dog family. But still, the feeling, the knowledge: “that’s my dog.”
