Three-year-old Nelson had an unstable start in life. What is known of his history is that an owner of his moved away and, viewing Nelson as expendable, simply left him as a stray in the neighborhood. A Good Samaritan in the neighborhood took care of Nelson for several months, but was moving and was unable to take Nelson with him. Fortunately, he contacted SWESR, who were able to place Nelson in a loving foster home, where he is now.
His foster mom, Robin, has many dogs, and Nelson has fit in well with the pack. Nelson is now safe and secure, but he is ready to find his permanent person (or people!) and bond with them. What should you know about this darling boy?
Nelson doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He is exceptionally sweet with people and other dogs. He is energetic outdoors with an energy level that is typical for a young English Setter. He needs a securely fenced yard to roam where he will happily self-exercise, but he also likes a good game of fetch. He enjoys playing with other dogs, where he’s rough and tumble, vocal, and very, very happy. Having said that, when he is indoors, he knows to turn off his energy.
If you’re looking to begin an exercise program, or need motivation to stick to one, Nelson will keep you fit and active! He really needs an active family that can meet his needs as a young English Setter.
He is a velcro dog who will bond strongly with his primary caregiver. It makes him so happy to be on the sofa with you, being petted and being part of a pack. He wants nothing more than to please and receive attention from his special person, because he was denied that attention and bonding experience when he was younger.
Nelson still remembers his time as a stray and as such he is a voracious eater. A slow feeder bowl would be a good idea for him. Because of his former food insecurity, he is highly motivated to eat anything edible, and as such is not a good candidate for a home with young children as he would, literally, eat the food out of their hands.
He is smart and well-behaved. He’s house trained and crate trained. He’s working on leash manners and loves his walks. He does not pull on leash, but he can zig-zag, because it’s exciting exploring the neighborhood!
Nelson is the type of dog who is going to thrive and grow into an integral, confident part of a new pack, and it will be joyous for his future family to experience this evolution first hand. Can you please share his story on your social media? If you are a person or know a person who is ready to expand their family and adopt a loving, smart, cuddle bug, please let SWESR know!
